Meaningful exploration of artistic expression, combining creative photography with contemporary art.
Shona Perkins and Fee Dickson Reid are passionate about their art and together they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience within their field. They met through their shared love for Scottish seascapes and whilst their work is across 2 very different mediums, both draw similarities in expression, evoking emotion and creating a sense of calm.
The affiliation between art and photography has been apparent for centuries. Many artists and fine art photographers seek inspiration from both mediums. Both photography and painting use the same fundamental elements such as light, space, colour, line, texture and more.
Both Shona and Fee share a special connection, having a great influence whilst drawing inspiration from each others work.
Fee Dickson Reid
Shona Perkins is an acclaimed photographer who has shot to prominence over the last 5 years on the international ICM scene; Fee Dickson Reid is an award winning artist who creates large scale, atmospheric seascapes in oils. For 18 months they have been collaborating through conversation, running creative retreats together, learning from each others skills and leaning in to each others vision.
This exhibition is the first chance to see how their work blurs the line between photography and painting, between vision and reality, between muse and creator, teacher and student. Itʼs about two women using two different mediums to create a singular enchanting perception of the world, inspired by each other and the sea.
Taking place at Gallery Close in the heart of Edinburghʼs New Town gallery, Shona and Fee will be there daily to talk through and demonstrate their work.

Shona Perkins is a Scottish Photographer, specialising in Seascape and intentional camera movement (ICM Photography).
Heavily influenced by contemporary art and abstract minimalism, Shona has spent the past few years developing her passion for ICM photography.
Whilst largely self-taught, Shona previously enrolled with the British Academy of Photography gaining a greater knowledge of the fundamentals and complexities of digital photography.
Technique is extremely important to Shona and whilst ICM photography demonstrates a certain creative freedom and experimentation, Shona applies a considered, focussed and disciplined approach to her work ensuring the best results are achieved in camera.
Often described as creating a sense of calm through her imagery, Shona manages to capture emotional depth, solitude, tranquillity and haunting beauty in her work, all whilst maintaining her distinctive painterly style.
Known as an inspirational leader and speaker,
Shona established her Business, My Beautiful Scotland in 2018 which showcases her stunning portfolio, leaving you in no doubt as to why Scotland has been voted one of the most beautiful Countries in the world.
Fee Dickson Reid creates expressive, atmospheric large-scale sea and landscapes filled with a sense of calm and peace. Her work is about the solace of nature, the light filled skies above her local beaches, reflections on sand and water, the landscape changing in the seasons. She aims to find the ‘still point in a turning world’, to anchor the viewer to a place and a state of mind that is about tranquillity and connection to the natural world.
Fee paints primarily in oils in the studio or occasionally with mixed media in situ. Her paintings are almost always completed ‘alla prima’, all in one session, and usually respond to the immediate weather, season, or light she has experienced that day– spirit of place is a core element of her work.
Fee trained in architecture at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating with a 1st class degree in 1996 and began exhibiting professionally as an artist in 2010.
An award winning artist, her work is held in collections private and public worldwide.

I had the pleasure of participating in the Capture to Canvas retreat in Fife, Scotland. It was in this beautiful place that I had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the creative arts, shared with newfound friends. I was new to photography and Shona walked me through each step from early enquiries by email from my home in Canada to the beaches in Fife. I always felt so welcomed to ask questions. It was thrilling to begin learning the techniques of ICM. From never holding a camera, I was doubtful I could learn, though Shona’s guidance instilled confidence and possibilities to carry with me on my journey back home.
Coming from a painting background, I loved our time in the studio between our outings. It was an honour to watch Fee paint and to learn new methods she taught to bring into my own work. Her generosity of sharing her skills, along with unfaltering encouragement was deeply appreciated. Fee also ensured that everyone was given the guidance they needed.
We stayed in a beautiful place called The Old Schoolhouse, where we were nourished and well looked after by Meredith. Upon entering her spacious home, there was a warm welcome and a continuous aroma of what I would describe as gourmet meals and desserts. One of my most cherished memories is the gathering around the dining table and all the care placed in the preparation of the incredible meals and a special comradeship amongst us.
There was an openness to share our thoughts, our progress, and our feelings. I felt a bond that developed from the first hello and deeply moved by being a part of it all.
When I look back, my heart fills with gratitude for the all the learning, and the support and care from Shona, Fee and Meredith gave throughout the retreat.

Thank you for the most amazing few days. Thinking back on it now, it feels like we spent a month together and my life is much richer for having invested my time with you all and I am so grateful for the reciprocated investment. Words truly cannot express my gratitude for how you've built into my life and I will be forever changed because of these 5 days together.
The Old Schoolhouse is a gem that exceeds all expectations. The renovation has taken every detail into account to create a romantic getaway that allows the flow of creativity and freedom to indulge in oneself. Your meal planning and catering was out of this world and I felt spoiled like a queen! The lovingly prepared meals were both nourishing and some of the best food I've ever enjoyed.

The Capture to Canvas retreat was truly inspirational. It was the perfect opportunity to learn and experiment in a safe and supportive environment. A great combination of ICM photography and oil painting, with some wonderful extras thrown in, staying in the most beautiful house. The whole retreat felt luxurious and a treat for the senses.
Shona and Fee skilfully supported the group on a wonderful creative journey where we all learnt a lot of technique and skills, but also learnt much about ourselves.
Shona's endless enthusiasm and superb technical skill inspired us all to embrace ICM photography and create some wonderful images. Working with Fee was truly an inspiration. As a newbie to oil painting she made me believe in myself and create pieces of artwork I could never have dreamed of.
Meredith opened her beautiful home to us, and we were made to feel very welcome and at home from the start. The house is spacious and luxurious with the most stunning views over the Firth of Forth. We were treated to the most delicious food, cooked with love and presented perfectly. Meredith's warm and friendly personality was the icing on the cake!
